This year the Grade 5 class consists of 20 students.
I am teaching Grade 5 ELA, Math, French, Art & Health as well as Grade 6 French.  Please check out our Blog for more information about Grade 5.

Here are the course outlines for Grade 5 core subjects.

Grade 5 Course Outlines
Language Arts
The Grade 5 Language Arts course will be based upon giving students opportunities to listen, speak, read, write, and represent in order to:
I. Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences
II. Comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, literacy, and media texts
III. Manage ideas and information
IV. Enhance the clarity and artistry of communication
V. Celebrate and build community
This year students will be involved in novel studies, research projects, a spelling program, writers’ workshop, readers’ workshop, penmanship, journal, and guided reading and writing.  These activities will be used to develop the skills and abilities to meet the learning outcomes of the Language Arts curriculum. Technology will be integrated into the Language Arts program.
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways including formative and summative assessment.  A student’s grade will be based on curriculum outcomes.

Mathematics
The Grade 5 Mathematics course will be based upon the following four strands and the specific outcomes outlined for each strand.

Number
  • Represents and describes numbers to 1 000 000.
  • Applies mental math and estimation strategies in problem solving situations.
  • Determine multiplication facts (to 81) and related division facts.
  • Apply mental mathematics strategies for multiplication.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication (2-digit numerals by 2-digit numerals) to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of division (3-digit numerals by 1-digit numerals) with and without concrete materials, and interpret remainders to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete and pictorial representations.
  • Describe and represent decimals (tenths, hundredths, thousandths) concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.
  • Relate decimals to fractions (tenths, hundredths, thousandths).
  • Compare and order decimals (tenths, hundredths, thousandths).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of decimals (limited to thousandths).
  • Patterns and Relations
  •      Determine the pattern rule to make predictions about subsequent elements.
  •      Solve problems involving single-variable (expressed as symbols or letters), one-step equations with whole-number coefficients, and whole-number solutions.
Shape and Space
Design and construct different rectangles given either perimeter or area, or both (whole numbers), and draw conclusions.
Demonstrate an understanding of measuring length (mm)
Demonstrate an understanding of volume
Demonstrate an understanding of capacity
Describe and provide examples of edges and faces of 3-D objects, and sides of 2-D shapes.
Identify and sort quadrilaterals
Perform a single transformation (translation, rotation, or reflection) of a 2-D shape, and draw and describe the image.
Identify a single transformation (translation, rotation, or reflection) of 2-D shapes.
Statistics and Probability
  • Differentiate between first-hand and second-hand data.
  • Construct and interpret double bar graphs to draw conclusions.
  • Describe the likelihood of a single outcome occurring
  • Compare the likelihood of two possible outcomes occurring
  • As a part of the math course students will be involved in hands-on learning, mental math practice, problem solving, whole group instruction, individual practice, and homework assignments.  Evaluation will be based on meeting the above outcomes.
